Whether you're rebuilding after injury, managing a body that can't handle high impact, or just trying to fit fitness into a packed week, EMS training might be the most intelligent workout you've never tried.
The problem most people face
Your body wants to move. Life gets in the way. We see it all the time at Breflex. Someone training consistently, then a knee gives out, a back flares up, a shoulder needs surgery. Suddenly the question isn't how to train, it's whether you can train at all. Or maybe it's not injury. Maybe it's a full-time job, young kids, a business to run. The idea of spending an hour or more at the gym three or four times a week just doesn't fit the reality of your week. EMS training was built for exactly these situations. Here's why it works.
What is EMS training, in plain English?
EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation. You wear a specially designed suit fitted with electrodes across your major muscle groups. Those electrodes deliver gentle, controlled electrical impulses that cause your muscles to contract, the same way they would during exercise, but far more comprehensively. In a typical gym session, your body recruits roughly 30 to 40% of available muscle fibres. EMS activates up to 90%, including the deep stabilising muscles that are nearly impossible to target with free weights or machines. The result is a thorough, full-body workout with almost no mechanical stress on your joints, tendons, or ligaments. Your muscles are working hard. Your joints are just along for the ride. A single 20-minute session delivers a training stimulus that would take significantly longer to achieve through conventional exercise. That's not a marketing claim; it's the reason EMS technology originally came out of physiotherapy and rehabilitation settings back in the 1950s. At Breflex, we use the XBody EMS system, which meets Australian and European safety standards and uses XBody DryWear technology, so there's no wet suit involved. It's a clean, comfortable experience.
What to expect when you arrive
Your first session is a full one-hour introduction, conducted one-on-one with a qualified Breflex trainer. You'll talk through your goals and health history, get fitted into the EMS gear, and work through a complete trial session with intensity adjusted to suit you. One thing worth knowing: the DryWear shirt has electrode pads built into the fabric that need to sit directly against your skin. Breflex provides all the DryWear you need, so you don't need to bring anything. Your trainer will walk you through exactly how to get set up before the session starts. After your first session, regular slots accommodate a maximum of two clients at a time, so your trainer is always focused on you.
For people recovering from injury
Returning to exercise after injury is one of the trickiest decisions you'll make. Push too hard and you risk re-injury. Rest too long and you lose the muscle tone, circulation, and strength your body needs to heal properly. EMS occupies a genuinely useful space here. Because the electrical impulses do the activation work, rather than heavy loads or fast movements, you can maintain and rebuild strength without the forces that typically aggravate an injury. A few things worth noting: The EMS suit covers muscle groups from the upper legs upward, making it particularly well suited to recovery involving the back, hips, glutes, core, and upper body. Intensity is fully adjustable session by session. And it can run alongside your physiotherapy plan, supporting your recovery rather than replacing it. We always recommend consulting your GP or physiotherapist before using EMS for rehabilitation purposes, and at Breflex, we complete a full health screening before your first session.
For people who are short on time
Two 20-minute sessions per week is the recommended protocol. That's 40 minutes of actual training time, which is why EMS works so well for busy professionals, parents, and anyone whose schedule doesn't have room for long gym sessions. There's no warm-up equipment required and no waiting for machines. You arrive, you train, you're done. Many members at Breflex combine their EMS sessions with a yoga or Pilates class to build a complete movement and recovery routine, all within one studio.
Is EMS right for you?
EMS tends to be a strong fit if you:
It's worth knowing that EMS is not suitable for everyone. It's not appropriate during pregnancy, for those with certain cardiac conditions, or for people with implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers. There's also a longer list of conditions where medical consultation is required first. You can find the full details on the Breflex FAQ page. If you're unsure, reach out to the team and they'll help you work it out before you book.
