Hot Yoga: What to Expect When It's Your First Time in the Heat

Walking into a 40°C studio for the first time is a moment. Here's what to bring, how to prepare, and what you'll experience in your first Hot Bikram class.

April 19, 2026

Walking into a room heated to 40 degrees for the first time is a bit of a moment. Your brain says "is this normal?" and your body starts sweating before you've even done anything. But here's the thing: thousands of people do hot yoga every week and absolutely love it.
Here's what you actually need to know before you go.

What is Hot Bikram Yoga?
Hot Bikram Yoga is a structured yoga practice consisting of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, performed in a heated room at around 40°C with 40-50% humidity. The sequence is always the same, which means you know what's coming each time and can track your progress as you get stronger and more flexible. The heat enhances flexibility, encourages sweating, supports circulation, and helps deepen your connection to the practice.

What to bring
Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing and bring a water bottle. Yoga mats are provided, so you don't need to worry about bringing your own. You will need to bring a towel to lay over your mat during class. It's always best to bring your own, but if you forget, Breflex has towels available to rent. Hydrate well beforehand and consider electrolytes if you sweat heavily. Arriving early gives you time to settle before the class starts, so aim to get there 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time.

What happens in class
You'll find a spot in the heated studio, lie down, and take a few minutes to adjust to the warmth before you begin. The session starts with a breathing exercise, moves through the 26 postures in sequence, and finishes with a cleansing breathing exercise to invigorate the body before your final rest. The instructors guide you through each pose with care, offering modifications to suit all levels. So if you can't touch your toes yet, that's completely fine.

Will it be hard?
Honestly, yes. But not in a way that should put you off. The heat is the main challenge for most first-timers. Start slow and take breaks as needed. There's no shame in sitting down for a moment. Everyone in the room has been the new person sweating through their first class. Class sizes are capped at 8 to 10 people, so it never feels crowded and your instructor can actually keep an eye on how you're going.

What are the benefits?
Consistently practicing Hot Bikram Yoga can improve flexibility, build strength and muscle tone, boost circulation, reduce stress, and support healthy weight management. It works your whole body and your mind at the same time.

The finishing touch
After every class, Breflex offers a cool, scented towel to help you refresh and cool down. It's a small thing but after 60 or 90 minutes in the heat, it genuinely feels amazing.

Is it right for you?
Hot Bikram Yoga suits most people, but it's worth knowing it's not recommended for those with certain health conditions including heart conditions, unmanaged high blood pressure, breathing difficulties aggravated by heat, or during pregnancy. If you're unsure, check with your doctor before you come.
