What Actually Happens in Your First EMS Session at Breflex

So you've heard people talking about EMS training. Maybe a friend mentioned it, or you spotted it on the Breflex website and thought "wait, they zap you with electricity?"
You're not alone.
EMS is one of those things that sounds a lot more intimidating than it actually is.
Here's exactly what to expect.

First, what even is EMS?
EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation. It uses low-frequency electrical impulses to activate your muscles, mimicking the natural signals your brain sends during exercise. The result? Your muscles engage more deeply, giving you a highly effective full-body workout in just 20 minutes. Think of it as a smarter workout, not a harder one.

Is it actually safe?
Good question, and a totally fair one. EMS training is scientifically proven and safe for most people. The technology actually originated in physiotherapy, where it was used to help patients recover muscle function after injury. Breflex uses the XBody EMS system, which has been rigorously tested, meets Australian and European safety standards, and has won internationally recognised awards. That said, EMS isn't for everyone. The team will always do a quick consultation before your first session to make sure it's the right fit for you. If you have any medical concerns, it's worth checking with your doctor first.

What happens when you arrive?
Your first session includes a full introduction where the team talks through your goals and health history, fits and calibrates your EMS gear, explains how the system works, and guides you through the movements while your trainer adjusts the intensity to suit you. There's no being thrown in the deep end. Your second session in the trial is a full 20-minute EMS workout, giving you the chance to experience what a regular session actually feels like.

The suit and what to wear
You'll wear a specially designed EMS suit fitted with electrodes that target key muscle groups. At Breflex, we use XBody dry technology, which means no soggy clothing. Underneath the suit you'll wear a pair of DryWear base layer, which Breflex provides for you. The team will have everything ready when you arrive.

The session itself
Once you're set up, your trainer guides you through a series of exercises while the EMS technology works alongside your movements. The impulses feel like a strong muscle contraction. A bit unusual the first time, but most people settle into it within the first few minutes. Your trainer adjusts the intensity throughout to match your goals, fitness and comfort level.

How often should you go?
Most people start with one to two EMS sessions per week, depending on their goals, recovery, and training history. There must be at least 48 hours between sessions to allow your muscles to recover properly. Your trainer will help you find the right rhythm. It's normal to feel some muscle fatigue or delayed-onset soreness (DOMS) after your first few sessions. Staying hydrated, fuelling the body, keeping light movement on the day of your session, and prioritising sleep all help with recovery.

Who is it good for?
EMS is low-impact, time-efficient, and ideal for all fitness levels, whether you're a busy professional, a fitness enthusiast, or recovering from an injury. It's also gentle on joints. As Breflex founder Christine puts it: "You don't need to be fit to start, just willing to try something new."
